Frequently Asked Questions

What types of produce can you expect to find in your basket?

Because produce is a seasonal market there isn't a way for me to tell you exactly what will be in your basket until your specified pick up date. Let me explain: The produce wholesaler faxes me their pricing list Monday morning and I spend some time going over the list noting the good deals that would work well for our participants. After every payment due date I know for certain how many participants we will have and how many baskets I must fill. With those numbers in place I also know the amount of money that I have to work with within that location.

I aim to have between 11 and 15 different produce varieties and a total of 40-50 TOTAL items in each basket. Produce staples are found in every basket. You will always have a type of apple and bananas and some type of lettuce and tomatoes in each basket. The rest of the produce varieties are chosen for cost and seasonal availability.

On Saturday, October 11, 2008, we found the following produce items in each basket:

Apple, Red Delicious
Banana
Grape, Red Seedless
Lemon
Orange
Pear, Bosc
Cucumber
Lettuce, Romaine Hearts
Mushroom, Medium White
Onion, Yellow
Pepper, Green Bell
Pepper, Red Bell
Potato, Russet Idaho
Tomato, Roma

As you can see there were 14 different produce varieties and the basket totaled 50+ items. I priced these items with my local Harris Teeter Market and the amount came to $53.17. Can you believe that? At only $17.50 per participant that is a savings of $36.00!

15 different produce varieties and 50+ total items. Total when priced with my local Harris Teeter Market, $51.86. At only $17.50 per participant that is a savings of nearly $35.00!

Is the produce organic?

The produce wholesaler that I deal directly with supplies produce to local area restaurants, public schools and supermarkets. Because there isn’t a high demand for organic produce within the restaurant field or in the public schools, organic items aren’t available often. I do purchase organic produce items when the opportunity presents itself, but most of our produce is of a non-organic nature. The produce is of high quality, just not typically organic.

Our family eats a lot of produce. What should I do?

Simple! Purchase two baskets at every group pick up.
Double the baskets equate to double the produce for you and your family.

Is there a choice in what produce is chosen?

I try to accommodate the best as I can, but remember I am dealing with hundreds of participants. For obvious reasons everyone’s dislikes and likes vary so what I like to offer instead is a "love" list. What would you LOVE to find in your basket if the opportunity presented itself? Email me your "love" list today.
